Gene Smart
BAC Medical Marketing is proud to nationally market Gene Smart products, designed to put bioactives back in your diet, and trigger your bodies' own survial systems to lose weight and reduce your risk of inflammatory diseases.
You will notice that they don't sell lots and lots of supplements, but only a chosen few (Fish Oil, Borage Oil and Pomegranate & Green Tea Extract) that are specifically designed to support the program with the right types and levels of bioactives that can be difficult to get in foods alone. In addition, their one-of-a-kind Omega-3 Index Blood Test is the new measure in heart health. They also have The Gene Smart Diet system that utilizes the above mentioned supplements, in conjunction with a special diet and excercise (five days a week, for at least 30 minutes) program.
The Gene Smart Omega-3 Index
The Omega-3 Index is the new measure of heart health. It may be the most important number your patients know.
The Omega-3 Index is a stronger predictor of heart disease risk than cholesterol. Individuals with a high Index have a decrease in the relative risk for sudden cardiac death by as much as 90%!
Are your patients getting the right types and amounts of Omegas in your diet? How much Omega-3 do they need? What about Omega-6?
Now you can check their Omega scores with this convenient Omega-3 blood test kit which includes two important measures of Omega-3s in their blood; their Omega-3 Index and their Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio, an important factor associated with chronic, whole body inflammation.
Knowing your patients' Omega levels can help them proactively make changes to their diet to reduce their risk of heart disease and other conditions associated with chronic inflammation.
Now, breaking research suggests these same Omega-3s may protect their cells against the aging process. To learn how, please click here.
Taking the Omega-3 blood test is easy. Simply follow the instructions in the convenient test kit to collect a drop of blood and return your patients' blood sample in the enclosed return envelope. Within about two weeks, you will receive their lab results by mail along with a customized report, explanation of results and resources to help them make and sustain changes to their diet that will positively impact their Omega scores.
The Gene Smart Diet System
Phase I: Adaptive Response
Lasting three weeks, or until your patients have reached their optimal weight, this is the most rigorous stage of the program. The purpose of this phase is to trigger their adaptive stress response, and make a real break with their unhealthy past, both mentally and physically.
Phase II: Preconditioning
Once they’ve arrived at their optimal weight, they will move to the two-week-long Preconditioning Phase. It’s called Preconditioning because it’s “conditioning” them to what their diet should be for the rest of their lives. They will be happy to know that this phase is a little less stringent than Phase I. Most importantly, they are moving to a 10 to 20 percent reduction in calories. They will continue to consume high quantities of polyphenols, and they will continue to increase their physical activity as they continue to “get into shape.”
Phase III: Optimal Maintenance
This is the ongoing phase of the program. The goal in this phase is to balance the number of calories your patients consume with the number of calories they burn. The polyphenols and Omega-3s are maintained at a high level so they get all the benefits. And they will be further “stressing” their bodies and activating all those anti-inflammatory gene pathways with the described exercise program.
Congratulations! In this phase, they can start consuming two other important polyphenol sources, dark chocolate and red wine, which are excluded from the earlier phases of the diet because of their caloric impact and their potential effects on appetite.
Science behind the Program
While the Gene Smart Program is simple to follow, behind the scenes the science is revolutionary and leverages numerous leading edge scientific discoveries and approaches to improving health.
Inflammation
One of the most unique differences of the Gene Smart program is its focus on reducing whole body inflammation. Increasingly, science is showing that many of the diseases we once considered diseases of aging, are in fact, diseases of inflammation. Dr. Fred Chilton*, Founder of the Gene Smart Program, has spent over 30 years researching inflammation and inflammatory diseases. In fact, his mentor was part of a Nobel Prize winning team that mapped one of the key inflammatory pathways in the human body.
Adaptive Stress Response
The adaptive stress response is a genetic response to environmental stress that helps our cells take care of themselves more efficiently and thoroughly than they would ordinarily. The Gene Smart program utilizes strategies based on the latest research to trigger the adaptive stress response through particular bioactives in our food, and through a specific approach to exercise.
Gene-Based Nutrition
The Human Genome project was completed in 2003. This remarkable project, which took 13 years and cost $3 billion, identified the 30,000 genes present in the human body. This new knowledge provided Dr. Chilton and his research colleagues throughout the world a whole new set of tools to discover how nutrition and exercise can influence our genes and our health. The science is in its early days. Dr. Chilton is at the forefront of understanding how the roughly 2,000 genes control the inflammatory response, including the master regulators that control cascades of other inflammatory genes.
Bioactives – Nature’s Pharmacy
Bioactives are specific compounds that are present in food. Bioactive compounds aren’t nutrients in the classical sense; that is, they’re usually not essential for life, but emerging research suggests that they are essential for good health. Essentially, the bioactives are Mother Nature’s pharmacy. They are potent and have terrific efficacy, even in very small quantities. And, they are much safer, because unlike pharmaceuticals, bioactives have developed along with our bodies to be used by them. More precisely, in the right dosages, they interact directly with the master health regulators that control our genes. The Gene Smart program focuses on three particular types of bioactives: fiber, polyphenols and omegas.
Clinical Studies
There are hundreds of clinical trials from a number of medical institutions and published in the best scientific journals that support the individual aspects of the Gene-Smart approach.
In addition, Dr. Chilton’s own laboratory recently completed an eight-week long observational study with 59 participants of all shapes and sizes on the effectiveness of the Gene Smart Program. Perhaps not surprisingly since each individual strategy is clinically validated, the results from the observational study on the Gene Smart program showed that individuals lost weight, decreased whole body inflammation, reduced risk of disease, improved their overall health, and improved their mood and energy! Gene Smart is one of few wellness programs proven to work in this type of study.
