A Sound Approach To Recovery
The American population receives local and general
anesthesia with great frequency. Many people assume
that the process is entirely safe. The truth is that
problems associated with anesthesia range from frequent
headaches, nausea and vomiting, to systemic toxicity, to
death (estimated 5 per million) [1].
With roughly 40 million people receiving some form of anesthesia per year in the United States alone, this mortality rate may seem high. However, when compared to the 1 death per 10,000 administrations that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s, it is obvious that the science of anesthesiology has made great strides.
These strides have allowed the average person to fear the blade or the condition requiring anesthesia much more than the sedative drug itself. However, the problem is that even with the marked advancement of the science, anesthesiology ranks 7th of all medical specialties in terms of indemnities paid. An average of 34% of claims made against anesthesiologists close, with a staggering $362,000 indemnity paid per physician [2].

BAC Medical Ancillary Care, in partnership with Dr. Alice Cash, Founder & CEO of Surgical Serenity Solutions, now offers a simple, natural technique that you can use to reduce or eliminate the pain and side effects of surgery – and recover in less time. The unique, patented Surgical Serenity Headphones with scientifically chosen, soothing music have a 4 GB Built-in Flash Memory to allow room for special high-quality music, a built-in rechargeable battery that can be charged in a USB computer port or USB wall charger and a battery play-time between 20 to 24 hours after a full charge.
Surgical Serenity Headphones are now being used in the Cleveland Clinic (both in Cleveland, OH and Weston, FL) as well as in Johns Hopkins Hospital in suburban Maryland. She sent some of the very first headphones to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and they were used successfully with post-cardiac surgery patients. Rush Medical Center in Chicago is very interested in getting some of the headphones. The headphones have been used in Kentucky at Norton Hospital, Baptist Hospital East, Jewish Hospital, University Hospital, and the Robley Rex VA Hospital. Then there are smaller, lesser-known hospitals all around the country that have had patients bringing the headphones in and allowed to use them.
Engage Rhythmic Entrainment*
Using the unique, patented headphones with scientifically chosen, soothing music, instant benefits include:
* Rhythmic entrainment in music therapy is a specialized practice used to assist in helping people become more “in tune” to their own rhythm and the rhythms of the world around them. Entrainment is a physics term that is used to explain that two objects moving together use less energy than two objects moving in opposite directions, so even when they are moving differently, if they are placed next to each other will, over time, begin to move together in synchronicity.
Medical Research Studies
Research on the beneficial effects of music in medicine comes from many different disciplines. These include surgery, anesthesia, music therapy, pain medicine, complementary medicine, geriatrics and obstetrics/neonatology. These studies range from small N=40 studies, to studies including hundreds of patients. Across the board, the summaries reveal that music is a safe but powerful anxiety and pain reducing agent and that it should be strongly considered in the peri-operative period.
Until very recently, it was assumed that having music during the actual surgery, when under general anesthesia, would be pointless because the patient would literally not hear it! For this reason, surgeons and OR staff often chose their preferred music which was upbeat and energizing for long surgeries. Doctors and patients tell me on a regular music that doctors asked them what kind of music they wanted to hear, going to sleep, and then changed it to their preferred music.
Surgical Serenity Solutions is founded on the idea that music affects the body profoundly, even when the patient is asleep, because of well-documented phenomenon known as rhythmic entrainment. Because of rhythmic entrainment, the patient’s heart-rate and breathing begin to synchronize with the pulse of the slow, steady music, coming through cordless headphones. As a result, the patient begins to relax while in the pre-op area and is anesthetized faster and with less anesthesia in the OR. Having the music flowing through our cordless headphones, directly into the brain through the eighth cranial nerve, keeps the patients vital signs stabilized as entrainment takes hold.
When the patient arrives in the recovery area, they wake up faster and with less nausea and vomiting as a result of having less anesthesia and from having our scientifically chosen soothing music throughout the surgery.
Other benefits include allowing the surgeons to play their own preferred music through the surgery, because the patient has their ideal music playing through cordless headphones that effectively block the OR music and conversations that might be better not heard by the patient. Then there’s the HIPAA issue. Apparently, OR’s are experiencing serious overcrowding these days and often have to put many patients in the hall, awaiting their surgeries. When this happens, patient confidentiality is seriously compromised as doctors and nurses tend to and talk with their patients, inadvertently revealing sensitive information.

Using the unique, patented headphones with scientifically chosen, soothing music, instant benefits include:
- Improve your patient’s overall satisfaction
- Create a safe and serene experience for your patients
- Tap into the power of rhythmic entrainment* to stabilize body rhythms
- Shown to reduce the amount of medication needed before, during, and after surgery
- Allow your patient to block out any unwanted operating room noise and conversations
- Block out surgeon’s music which is usually upbeat and faster tempo
- Provide a cost-effective solution that shortens your hospital stay
- Help orient patient post-surgery, essentially a catalyst to the recovery process and improved efficiency
